When supermarkets change their old HID lamps over to new LED lighting fixtures they benefit in three main ways. With savings from the power use which is usually slashed in half, with savings from maintenance costs which can be very expensive if the lights are high up and hard to get to, and last but not least the improvement of the actual light for the supermarket. Better lighting means happier and more comfortable customers that can actually see the product they are buying properly which generally leads to better sales.
For the actual change over of the fittings it all starts out in the car park, usually with fittings mounted high up on poles. Changing these to LED makes a lot of sense as these fitting are expensive and hard to get to for maintenance issues. Also the old fittings tend to have become much more yellow in their tone and dimmer which means a more negative overall experience for their customers before they even reach the store. These fittings are usually changed to LED flood lights which will provide many more lumen and at a comfortable tone temperature like 4k or 5k. Then we can automate their operation with a light sensor so they come on and go off when most appropriate.
Inside it is common to mount LED high bay lights from the ceiling, usually by a chain so they come down to an optimum height for even, bright lumen dispersion. We use light software modelling (photo-metric modelling) to find the optimum height and distance between each fitting. These fittings are often complemented with LED slim battens which are put around the store usually mounted on just above the food racks to provide a stronger local illumination. The LED slim battens can be daisy chained together in a long row to provide lots of even lumens. Strip lighting can also be used for smaller food racks or custom spaces where the battens might not fit.
LED panels can also be used for the background general lighting depending on the ceiling height and track lights are also popular to highlight local areas within the shop.
LED lighting for the produce area means more lumens so the produce looks better, lower temperatures so the produce doesnt degrade as fast and less maintenance issues as the fitting operates more reliably for longer.
Automation can save you even more over the years as a lot of these lights are left on all the time, when many of them can be on sensors. For example staff bathrooms and other staff areas can be lit up only when the staff use the areas.
So as you can see in the supermarket setting changing your old lighting to new commercial grade quality LED light fixtures is going to save you lots of money spent on power and maintenance over time as well as increasing the pleasure of your customers experience and thus your bottom line.
